Visual inspection is one of the most common and effective non-destructive testing methods. Visual testing requires sufficient illumination of the testing surface and proper vision of the tester. For visual inspection to be most effective, it requires special attention because it requires training (knowledge of the product and process, anticipated service conditions, acceptance criteria, record keeping, etc.) and has its own equipment and tools. There is also the fact that all defects detected by other non-destructive testing methods must ultimately be confirmed by visual inspection. While visual inspection is limited to checking the surface of the material, it is often able to identify very damaging defects.Visual inspection (abbreviated “VT”) by the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) for welded components requires inspectors to have extensive knowledge of many technologies, including welding, destructive testing, nondestructive testing, and metallurgy, as well as the correct terminology for each.
